Engine Break-In

CAUTION: – Lugging engine at low rpms (below 2000 rpm) and/or running engine prematurely at high rpms may result in damage to pistons and/or other engine components. No freeway for the first 500 miles !

Protect your investment!  Be sure that you have put in fresh petroleum-based oil before initial startup. We highly recommend switching to a good synthetic oil, such as Red Line or Mobil 1, after 1000-mile break-in.

  1. Upon initial startup, don't sit and admire your handiwork, allow only a couple of minutes of warm-up. Do not let engine overheat - excessive engine temperature may cause permanent damage.
  2. The first 100 miles are the most critical for new rings and piston break-in. Most engine damage will occur during this period. Keep heat down by not exceeding 3000 rpm. Vary speeds and do not lug engine.
  3. Change oil and filter at 100 miles.
  4. The next 400 miles should be spent running engine no faster than 3500 rpm or about 60 mph. Continue to vary speed and do not lug engine. No hard acceleration.
  5. Change oil and filter at 500 miles.
  6. For balance of first 1000 miles, bike can be operated in a normal but conservative manner. Speed can be run up to 60-70 mph or 4000 rpm. Freeway is OK, but only for short trips. Continue to vary engine speeds. Avoid overheating and lugging engine – NO DRAG RACING, trailer towing, dyno runs, hard acceleration, etc.
  7. Change oil and filter (synthetic is now OK) at 1000 miles then . . . . .
  8. HAVE FUN !!!
WARNING: Even after break-in, the engine must always be warmed to proper operating temperature before any hard acceleration or exceeding 3500 rpm. Allow bike to warm-up for a couple of minutes, then take it easy for the first 10 minutes or 10 miles.
